My Education History

Greetings World!

I began this website because I have learned much throughout my teaching years about how modern schooling has brought about the poor quality of North American education. I have taught school for over 35 years in various capacities. I watched my 3 children navigate through a private school and I taught so many others in that school. The advantage of teaching in a private school was that I got to see how public schooling had not allowed students to succeed. So many parents had given up on the public system to try to get their kids an education. So many children had not learned to read properly and needed our remedial reading program. I began to see how public education was changing over the years and what it was doing to perfectly ordinary kids. I also learned about the challenges some face through learning difficulties and failing to learn what was needed. I also became a tutor, specializing in dyslexia and other learning disabilities.

In 2009, I moved away and got a job tutoring in a university. I began to meet a lot of people who wanted to return to school to obtain certificates, diplomas, and degrees. They wanted to become nurses, tradesmen, and professionals. I worked with a lot of students who needed to upgrade their high school education to do so. I obtained my Master’s degree, but the personal learning experiences I had while teaching were far more valuable.

The lessons I had learned teaching the younger grades served me well teaching adults because I could see what they had missed in their earlier grades. I also found that there were really big gaps in their understanding because of how they had been taught. I researched constantly to try to figure out what had happened to our public schools, and what I found shocked me and made me want to do something about it. Much of what you will read on my website was gleaned over my years of researching, teaching, and tutoring.

I am an educator first and foremost, and I hope I can see a way forward to getting our public schools to serve parents and children as they were originally intended. While I appreciate many modern innovations, I believe we always need to move forward cautiously before we adopt unproven theoretical experiments that can have devastating effects on our children.
